EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Rupert, also known as Rupert of the Palatine, is depicted in regal splendor. Born in 1352, Rupert rose to prominence as the Elector Palatine and later became King of Germany, Hungary, Bohemia, and Italy. He was also elected King of the Romans, making him the heir to the Holy Roman Empire. Rupert is shown here wearing the imperial crown, symbolizing his claim to the imperial throne, and holding both the scepter and a dagger. The scepter represents his power and authority, while the dagger serves as a reminder of his military prowess. Rupert's imperial title, "Sigismundus Romanorum Imperator," is inscribed at the bottom of the image. Rupert's reign was marked by significant political and military developments. He played a key role in the Council of Constance, which aimed to resolve the Great Schism in the Catholic Church. Rupert also led military campaigns against the Ottoman Turks and the Hussites in Bohemia. This engraving is taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. The work was a comprehensive history of the Roman Empire and its successors, including the Holy Roman Empire. The classical portrait of Rupert reflects the contemporary fascination with ancient Roman history and the Caesars and Kaisers who came before him. Overall, this copperplate engraving offers a glimpse into the grandeur and power of Holy Roman Emperor Rupert, a complex and influential figure in European history.
