1704 1774 Bastard Dresden Georg Governor Johann Sachsen Stark

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Johann Georg von Sachsen, also known as Georg Haugwitz or Georg Haukowitz, a bastard son of August der Starke (August the Strong), Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, born in 1704 and passing away in 1774. Georg was an accomplished military commander and governor of Dresden, the capital city of the Electorate of Saxony. August der Starke, a powerful and extravagant ruler, had numerous illegitimate children, and Georg was one of his many bastards recognized and legitimized. Despite his illegitimate status, Georg was educated and trained in military arts, and he rose through the ranks to become a trusted and capable commander. Georg's military career began in 1725 when he joined the Saxon army and served in the War of the Polish Succession. He distinguished himself in several battles, including the Battle of Mollwitz in 1741, where he led a successful cavalry charge against the Austrian forces. In 1746, Georg was appointed as the governor of Dresden, a position he held until his death in 1774. During his tenure as governor, Georg oversaw the reconstruction of the city after the devastating Seven Years' War. He also implemented various reforms aimed at improving the living conditions of the people of Dresden and strengthening the city's defenses. This portrait, likely painted during Georg's military career, captures the essence of a man of great courage and determination. Georg von Sachsen's legacy as a military commander and governor of Dresden continues to be celebrated in Saxon history.
