EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Curtiss-Wright C-46D Commando CC-CDH (msn 32940) of Alfa Chile, parked at Miami International Airport in the late 1960s. The C-46D-10-CU Commando, delivered to the United States Army Air Force as 44-77544, was retired from military service on 28 December 1957, and later sold to various civilian owners. Here, it is seen with a Rutas Aereas Nacionales SA (RANSA) Boeing 377 in the background. The Commando, powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-2800-54B engines, was a versatile transport aircraft that had served with distinction during World War II and the Korean War. In civilian hands, it was used for various tasks, including the transportation of cargo. In February 1967, while carrying 5 tonnes of meat for Alfa Chile, the CC-CDH crashed in a mountainous area at La Yareta Pass in Chile, injuring all four crew members. The aircraft, a relic of a bygone era in aviation, is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Curtiss-Wright Commando and the indomitable spirit of those who flew it.
