Mural painting JLP01_08_078258
Victoria Park Estate, Macclesfield, Cheshire East. Artists painting a mural for the Victoria Park development.
The Victoria Park development in Macclesfield, lying between the park and the centre of town, was built by Laing in two phases using the 12M Jespersen system. Providing around 500 flats, the design consisted of thirteen interlinked blocks forming a series of courts with landscaped gardens. The first phase was completed in 1968 with the second phase started in the same year. In June 1968, an article in Laings monthly newsletter Team Spirit mentions that the mural, which was on a main approach to the estate, was designed by Christine Bailey of Macclesfield County High School and was painted by a group of her school friends under the supervision of two members of staff. The mural depicted a collage of Macclesfield with patterns of its famous silks and buttons intermingled with landmarks and mills in the town

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time during the creation of a vibrant mural for the Victoria Park development in Macclesfield, Cheshire East. The development, situated between the park and town center, was constructed by Laing using the innovative 12M Jespersen system. Comprising thirteen interconnected blocks arranged around landscaped gardens, this architectural marvel provided approximately 500 flats. The mural itself holds great significance as it showcases a collage of Macclesfield's rich heritage. Designed by Christine Bailey from Macclesfield County High School, it was skillfully painted by a group of her school friends under the guidance of two staff members. This artistic masterpiece beautifully intertwines patterns inspired by Macclesfield's renowned silks and buttons with iconic landmarks and mills that define the town's identity. Dating back to June 1968, an article in Laings' monthly newsletter Team Spirit proudly mentions this remarkable mural located on one of the main approaches to the estate. It stands as a testament to both community collaboration and creative expression. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print not only captures an exquisite piece of wall painting but also serves as a window into life during the 1960s when art and design played an integral role in shaping public spaces.
