From the Shelton, West, 1935 (gelatin silver print)
5934661 From the Shelton, West, 1935 (gelatin silver print) by Stieglitz, Alfred (1864-1946); 24.3x18.9 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: Midtown Manhattan with the Newsweek Building, rising solidly on the right, and the sleek RCA Building, standing a head taller on the left. Alfred Stieglitz took this photograph from the thirtieth floor of the nearby Shelton Hotel, where he and Georgia O Keeffe, his wife at that time, worked and lived from 1925 to 1935. During his last spring in the building, Stieglitz exposed at least seven negatives of the same western view. From the Shelton, Looking West, like most others in this group, was made early in the morning, when the raking light provided strong contrasts. The cloudless sky serves as a neutral backdrop, transforming the Midtown skyline into a dynamic sculpture. From the Shelton, West, 1935 - A Captivating Glimpse of Midtown Manhattan
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This gelatin silver print captures a mesmerizing view of Midtown Manhattan in 1935. Taken by renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz from the thirtieth floor of the Shelton Hotel, this photograph offers a unique perspective on the bustling cityscape. In the foreground stands the solid presence of the Newsweek Building, while to its left rises the sleek and towering RCA Building. The contrast between these two architectural marvels is enhanced by Stieglitz's masterful use of raking light during an early morning shoot. The cloudless sky serves as a neutral backdrop, allowing for a dynamic transformation of the Midtown skyline into what appears to be a sculptural masterpiece. During his time at the Shelton Hotel, Stieglitz took several photographs from this western vantage point. "From the Shelton, Looking West" is one among many that showcases his artistic vision and technical expertise. Interestingly enough, while Stieglitz was busy capturing these breathtaking images, his wife Georgia O'Keeffe painted her own interpretations of New York City from their shared workspace. Now housed at Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, this gelatin silver print provides us with an intriguing glimpse into both history and artistry. It immortalizes not only an iconic moment in New York City's architectural evolution but also reflects upon Stieglitz's deep connection with both photography and his surroundings.
