Coal keels (one partly loaded) are drawn up to the Harton Colliery loading staithes at the Mill Dam, South Shields. On the shore is a coal chaldron (wagon), which has been brought along rails from the mine. Other keels are being rowed out to load a two-masted brig in the river. This ship will take coal down the coast to southern ports. In the centre of the scene is a river boat, the wherry Jane. Its hull shows the lines of its overlapping planks (clinker-built).
