EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the extinct White Urus, also known as the Hamilton breed of wild Scottish cattle. The White Urus, scientifically classified as Taurus urus or Bos scoticus, was a large and distinctive breed of wild cattle that once roamed the Scottish Highlands. The image, taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library in Edinburgh, published in 1836, was illustrated by James Stewart and engraved by Lizars. The White Urus was characterized by its large size, with some bulls reaching over 2,000 pounds in weight, and its distinctive white coat. This breed was believed to have descended from ancient cattle that roamed the wilds of Scotland before the introduction of domestic livestock. They were known to live in herds and were adapted to the harsh Scottish climate, with long, curved horns that helped them navigate the rocky terrain. Unfortunately, the White Urus was hunted to extinction in the late 18th and early 19th centuries due to their valuable hides and horns. This engraving serves as a reminder of the beauty and majesty of a species that once thrived in the Scottish wilderness. The intricate details of the engraving, from the textured fur to the expressive eyes of the animal, capture the essence of the White Urus and provide a glimpse into a time when these magnificent creatures roamed free. This historical art piece is a testament to the importance of preserving natural history and the role that art and science can play in documenting and celebrating the natural world. The White Urus may be extinct, but through images like this, we can continue to appreciate and learn from the natural wonders that have come before us.
