EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the unveiling of "Le Soldat Inconnu" or The Unknown Soldier, a tribute to the unidentified dead of the French army during World War One. The concept for the statue was inspired by a drawing by Louis Sabattier, and was executed by the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. The ceremony took place on Armistice Day, November 11, 1920, in the presence of French President Alexandre Millerand and other dignitaries. The statue, which depicts a helmeted soldier standing atop a sphere representing the globe, was designed to symbolize the sacrifice and unity of all French soldiers who gave their lives during the war. The unknown soldier is encircled by a wreath of laurel and palm leaves, and is flanked by two soldiers in uniform, paying their respects. The statue was originally located at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but was later moved to the Musée de l'Armée at the Hôtel des Invalides. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the enduring spirit of the French people in honoring their fallen heroes.
