EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the seven principal heroes of the legendary Trojan War, as depicted in Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1842. From left to right, we find Menelaus, Paris, Diomedes, Ulysses, Nestor, Achilles, and Agamemnon. Each hero is depicted in a thoughtful pose, with a unique expression that conveys their individuality and significance in the epic tale. Menelaus, the king of Sparta, is shown with a solemn expression, holding a fillet in his hand. Paris, the infamous prince of Troy, gazes off into the distance with a pensive look, while clutching a vase. Diomedes, a brave warrior from Thrace, is depicted with a determined expression and a spear in hand. Ulysses, also known as Odysseus, the cunning king of Ithaca, is shown deep in thought, with a servant holding a thread and a mirror behind him, perhaps symbolizing his famous wit and resourcefulness. Nestor, the wise and elderly king of Pylos, is depicted with a calm and serene expression, while holding a staff. Achilles, the legendary Greek hero, is shown with a fierce expression and clenched fist, symbolizing his strength and courage. Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae and the commander-in-chief of the Greek forces, is depicted with a regal expression and a scepter in hand. This impressive collection of busts is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Trojan War in Western literature and mythology. Sir William Hamilton, a renowned Scottish diplomat and collector of ancient art, may have been the inspiration for this illustration. The intricate details and vibrant colours of this handcoloured copperplate engraving make it a striking addition to any historical or mythological collection.
