The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Taken by artist Herbert Ponting in 1913, this image immortalizes the diverse group of individuals who were part of this historic journey. Among them are Stoker Angus McDonald, Engineer William A Horton, and Petty Officer Frederick Parsons, each with their own unique role and contribution to the expedition. Led by Scott himself alongside Dr Edward Wilson and other key members like Captain Lawrence Oates and Lieutenant Henry Bowers; they aimed not only to conduct scientific research but also to be the first humans to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and limited supplies due to blizzards along the way; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by further blizzards while returning from their unsuccessful attempt at glory; Scott and his remaining team perished in late March. Their bodies were found eight months later along with their poignant diaries which revealed their unwavering determination amidst unimaginable hardships. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of their courage and sacrifice in pursuit of scientific discovery and exploration.
