With an estimated population of only 1000 remaining as of 2007, this gentle giant is fighting for its survival. Belonging to the subspecies Elephas maximus borneensis, these elephants are smaller in size compared to their Asian counterparts and possess remarkably larger ears. The photograph was taken by Science Photo Library near the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The image captures the essence of this incredible creature against a backdrop of lush greenery and flowing waters. Its serene demeanor reflects both its passive nature and vulnerability in today's world. As we admire this magnificent animal through our lens, it serves as a reminder of the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect not just these elephants but also their habitat.
