EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, offers a fascinating glimpse into the military forces of Russia during the mid-19th century. The image features a Cossack officer in traditional uniform, complete with fur hat and ornate sash, standing proudly among his troops. To his right, a Bashkir archer, dressed in a long, flowing robe and armed with a bow and quiver, demonstrates his archery skills. Behind the Bashkir archer, a group of Kalmyk cavalrymen ride towards the viewer, their distinctive yellow robes and tall, conical hats making them easily identifiable. Each Kalmyk rider carries a lance and shield, ready for battle. In the background, more Cossacks, both on horseback and on foot, prepare for action. The regular Cossacks wear more practical uniforms, consisting of leather jackets, trousers, and boots, and are armed with muskets and sabres. This engraving provides a unique insight into the diverse military forces that made up the Russian army during this period. The Cossacks, a group of semi-autonomous military settlers, played a crucial role in the expansion and defense of the Russian Empire. The inclusion of non-Russian ethnic groups, such as the Bashkirs and Kalmyks, reflects the multicultural nature of the Russian military and the empire as a whole. The intricate detail and vibrant colours of this handcoloured engraving bring the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness this fascinating moment in history.
