The officers of the East India Company armies were largely from England, Scotland and Ireland. Scots and Irish were represented in a higher proportion than in the United Kingdom overall. Company officers generally came from more middle class backgrounds than officers in the British Army, who were more upper class.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an unidentified officer of the 13th Bombay Native Infantry, circa 1824. Painted by the talented artist George Chinnery, this oil on canvas masterpiece is currently housed in the National Army Museum in London. The officers of the East India Company armies during this time were primarily from England, Scotland, and Ireland. Interestingly, Scots and Irish individuals were represented in a higher proportion compared to their overall representation in the United Kingdom. It is worth noting that company officers typically hailed from more middle-class backgrounds than their counterparts in the British Army, who tended to come from upper-class families. Chinnery's artistic journey began as a miniaturist based in London before he embarked on his travels to India in 1802. He also had the opportunity to visit Thailand and China during his lifetime. With only one brief return to England, Chinnery dedicated most of his life to exploring and capturing scenes from various parts of Asia until his passing in Macao in 1847. This remarkable portrait not only immortalizes an unknown officer but also provides us with a glimpse into the diverse composition of these historical military forces. The intricate details and skillful brushstrokes make it evident why this painting remains a treasured piece within our cultural heritage.
