The duel is part of Russian literature: the famous poet Alexander Pushkin perishes, and the writer Ivan Turgenev describes one in his novel Fathers and Sons (1862). From 1895, Repine created several canvases on this theme that fascinated him. He documents himself on duels between officers with a military lawyer friend and endeavours in his paintings to depict the moods of duelists. In 1897, he successfully presented at the second Venice International Exhibition a large version of this composition, subtitled " Forgive me!".); Photo © Sylvain Collet
