EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Dante Gabriel Rossetti's masterpiece, "Ecce Ancilla Domini" also known as "The Annunciation". Painted between 1849 and 1850, this iconic artwork can be found in the prestigious Tate Gallery in London. Rossetti, a British poet, illustrator, painter, and translator, co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais in 1848. Drawing inspiration from medieval influences and his namesake Dante Alighieri's works, Rossetti created a profound connection between art and literature. His marriage to Elizabeth Siddal further influenced his artistic journey; she became the model for his poignant painting "Beata Beatrix" after her untimely death. Rossetti's talent extended beyond traditional painting as he became a founding partner of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. , an influential decorative arts firm. It was during this time that he developed a close relationship with Jane Morris (William Morris' wife), who served as one of his muses. This particular print is featured in Lucien Pissarro's book titled "Rossetti - Masterpieces in Colour" published around 1912 by TC & EC Jack and Frederick A Stokes Co. The image beautifully captures the ethereal nature of the painting while highlighting its intricate details such as angel Gabriel, lilies symbolizing purity and innocence, and Mary receiving the divine message. With its rich colors and religious subject matter rooted in Christianity, this timeless piece continues to captivate viewers even today.
