EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling energy of Charing Cross and the Strand in London, circa 1910. The image showcases Charing Cross Station and Hotel, with its grand architecture dominating the scene as it looks north-east down the famous Strand. In the courtyard stands a remarkable sight - the Eleanor Cross, a replica of the original monument that was demolished centuries ago. Erected in 1865, this cross is part of a series of twelve stone monuments created by King Edward I to honor his late wife Eleanor of Castile. The hand-colored postcard provides a vivid glimpse into early 20th-century London life. The vibrant colors bring to life not only the architectural marvels but also various modes of transportation present at that time. Open-top buses traverse through busy streets while omnibuses add to the lively atmosphere. This photochrom print from Photochrom Co Ltd beautifully encapsulates an era where road transport and railways coexisted harmoniously amidst stunning cityscapes. It serves as a reminder of London's rich history and cultural heritage, showcasing both iconic landmarks like Charing Cross Station and lesser-known gems like the Eleanor Cross. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are transported back to an age when finance, communications, and postal services thrived within these very streets. This photograph truly exemplifies how art can preserve moments from our past for generations to come.
