This exquisite graphite drawing by John Christian Schetky captures the Round Tower in Portsmouth harbour during the Napoleonic period in 1815. The tower, built in the early 15th century to defend the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, underwent construction works during this time to extend its height and strengthen its defenses against enemy ships.
Schetky's attention to detail is evident in his depiction of the building site, showcasing the addition of a central column and brick vaulting to support heavy guns on the roof. The intricate lines and shading bring life to this historical moment, offering a glimpse into the architectural advancements of that era.
As you gaze upon this artwork, you can almost hear the sounds of construction echoing through time and imagine sailors bustling about their duties in this strategic port location. The drawing not only serves as a visual record of an important military structure but also as a testament to Schetky's skill as an artist.
