Plate, porcelain, famille verte enamels (turquoise, blue, iron-red, black and gold). Scene of mythical battle. Emperor Liu Xuan with attendants observes battle in which demon General Wang Mang astride a qilin participates
A tour de force in pictorial porcelain, the scene on this massive imperial charger represents an actual event: the final rout in a.d. 23 of the usurper, Wang Mang, by the imperial troops of Emperor Liu Hsiu, the founder of the later Han dynasty (a.d. 25-200). The emperor, dressed in yellow robes, watches from the battlements as Wang Mang, astride a mythological beast (kylin), surrounded by other fantastic animals and his followers, is driven from the walled city of K un Yang. Made for the imperial household, this magnificent platter combines the large scale, historic subject matter and fine craftsmanship befitting a palace object.); eMinneapolis Institute of Art; Gift of Mr and Mrs Frederick B. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable porcelain plate dating back to the 17th to 18th century. Created by the Chinese School, this exquisite piece measures an impressive diameter of 55.3 cm and is currently housed in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA. The plate features a stunning display of overglaze enamel decor, specifically belonging to the famille verte ware style. Its vibrant colors include turquoise, blue, iron-red, black, and gold. The central scene depicts a mythical battle where Emperor Liu Xuan stands alongside his attendants as they observe General Wang Mang astride a qilin participating in combat. What makes this artwork truly exceptional is that it portrays an actual historical event: the decisive defeat of Wang Mang by Emperor Liu Hsiu's troops in AD 23. The emperor can be seen dressed in yellow robes on top of battlements while witnessing Wang Mang's expulsion from K'un Yang - a walled city. Crafted for imperial use, this grand platter seamlessly combines its large scale with fine craftsmanship and significant subject matter fit for palace settings. It serves as both a testament to Chinese artistry and an important artifact from ancient history. This stunning photograph was captured by Bridgeman Images and is part of Fine Art Finder's collection.
