EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases Joseph-Jean-Baptiste de La Fleuriau d'Armenonville (1660-1728), a prominent French politician of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The image, taken from Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France" (Historical Costumes of France), published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852, is based on a portrait by Detrov. De La Fleuriau d'Armenonville is depicted in his ceremonial robes, adorned with the insignia of his esteemed positions as Commander of the Ordres du roi, specifically the Ordre de Saint-Michel and the Ordre du Saint-Esprit. The intricately designed robes, with their rich fabrics and vibrant colours, reflect the grandeur and opulence of the French court during this period. The Ordre de Saint-Michel and the Ordre du Saint-Esprit were two of the most prestigious orders of chivalry in the Kingdom of France, established by King Louis XI and King Louis XIII, respectively. Membership in these orders was a mark of distinction, reserved for those who had rendered exceptional service to the crown or the Church. Joseph-Jean-Baptiste de La Fleuriau d'Armenonville's political career spanned several decades, during which he held various high-ranking positions in the French government. His service to the crown and his dedication to the orders of the king earned him the respect and admiration of his contemporaries, as well as the privileges and honours that came with his positions. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the elegance and grandeur of the French court during this period, as well as the importance of the orders of chivalry in recognizing and rewarding exceptional service to the crown.
