EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the interior of a Maori fortified village, or pa, in New Zealand. The image, titled "Hippa or Pa," was created by Andrea Bernieri after a drawing by John Webber and published in Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World in Florence, Italy, in 1844. The Maori people are the indigenous Polynesian inhabitants of New Zealand, and their fortified villages were an essential aspect of their cultural and social structure. These pa were built for defensive purposes, with high palisades and defensive works designed to protect the community from external threats. In this illustration, we see a bustling Maori village with several huts clustered together inside the fortifications. Smoke rises from the chimneys of the huts, indicating that people are cooking and going about their daily activities. Warriors can be seen patrolling the walls, while others are engaged in various tasks within the village. The Maori people were skilled hunters, farmers, and fishermen, and their society was organized around iwi (tribes) and hapu (sub-tribes). The pa served as the center of community life, providing protection and a sense of unity for the people within. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Maori people in the mid-19th century and provides valuable insight into their rich cultural heritage. The use of handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a striking and captivating representation of a Maori fortified village.
