Created by artist Patten Wilson, this image vividly depicts Hereward attacking Peterborough Abbey in protest against William I's imposition of a Norman abbot during the early 20th century. Leaning on his elbow with an air of determination, Hereward stands as a symbol of resistance against the Norman Conquest and William the Conqueror's reign as King of England. His bearded face exudes both strength and wisdom while his eyes fixate on something beyond our view. Clad in medieval attire complete with helmet and shield, he embodies heroism amidst adversity. The monochrome composition adds depth to this historic scene, emphasizing its timeless significance. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back to a pivotal moment in English history when popular Anglo-Saxon resistance flourished under Hereward's leadership from his base near Ely.
