5919840 Taku Fort, China, 1860 (b/w photo) by Unknown photographer, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Taku Fort, China, 1860.
Photograph, 2nd China War (1857-1860), 1860.
The failure of the Chinese to adhere to the full terms of the Treaty of Nanking (1842), and interference with British commercial shipping, led to the despatch of a punitive force in 1857. Canton was captured in January 1858, and the Treaty of Tientsin signed on 20 May 1858, brought hostilities to a close. However, a further show of force was thought to be necessary in 1860, during which the Taku Forts were occupied on 12 August.

The context surrounding this particular image dates back to the Second China War (1857-1860). Following Chinese non-compliance with the Treaty of Nanking (1842) and their interference with British commercial shipping, a punitive force was dispatched in 1857. After capturing Canton in January 1858, hostilities were brought to an end with the signing of the Treaty of Tientsin on May 20th, 1858. However, due to perceived necessity for further military action, another show of force took place in 1860. It was during this time that Taku Forts were occupied on August 12th. This photograph serves as a testament to these historic events and offers viewers a glimpse into one aspect of this tumultuous period. As part of Bridgeman Images' collection, this print showcases not only fortifications but also highlights early photography techniques used during that era. With its rich historical background and artistic value, it provides valuable insights into China's past while preserving moments frozen in time for future generations to appreciate.
