EDITORS COMMENTS
The photograph captures a Mauser C96 7.63 mm pistol, dating back to 1898, held in the collection of the National Army Museum in London. This German semi-automatic pistol gained significant recognition during the famous charge at Omdurman on September 2nd, 1898, amidst the Second Sudan War. Numerous British officers carried this particular firearm during that historic event. Interestingly, Lieutenant Winston Churchill himself acquired one of these pistols before embarking on his journey to Africa. Its popularity among soldiers stemmed from its remarkable power and ability to fire ten shots without reloading - four more than what was offered by the standard revolver used by the British Army at that time. Beyond its functionality, this Mauser C96 also boasted a unique style and design. Equipped with a box magazine and accompanied by a wooden holster that doubled as a shoulder stock, it stood out amongst other weapons of its era. This print not only showcases an iconic piece of weaponry but also provides us with insight into historical events and individual choices made by influential figures like Winston Churchill.
