The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), instituted in 1845, was awarded to sergeants and other senior non-commissioned officers with good, faithful, valuable and meritorious service, with conduct judged to be irreproachable throughout. They had to have at least 20 years service to qualify and already hold the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
