EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history when King George V, accompanied by Queen Mary, indulged in a well-deserved lunch after an exhilarating tiger hunting expedition in Nepal. The year was 1911, during their visit to India for the Delhi Durbar, commemorating their coronation. King George V, born in 1865 as the second son of Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark, ascended to the throne upon his father's death in 1910. A man of many accomplishments and progressive ideas, he appointed Ramsay MacDonald as Britain's first Labour Prime Minister in 1924 and introduced the tradition of broadcasting a Christmas message to the people. In this image, we see King George V seated at an outdoor table adorned with delicious food while donning his distinguished uniform and pith helmet. His regal presence is accentuated by Queen Mary standing beside him elegantly dressed. The king appears relaxed yet majestic as he enjoys his meal amidst lush surroundings. Tragically, King George V succumbed to influenza on January 20th, 1936. He left behind a remarkable legacy that would be carried forward by his eldest son Edward. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both the grandeur and humanity embodied by one of Britain's beloved monarchs during an era defined by change and progress.
