EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Prince Kung's Dragon and Phoenix Tianhuang Seals, dating back to the 17th-19th century. Carved from a single boulder with precision and skill, these seals are a testament to the mastery of Chinese School artists during this period. The first seal features a beautifully rendered dragon, delicately carved in low relief on its upper surface. The dragon is depicted gazing down at its young as they stride amongst lingzhi, symbolizing prosperity and longevity. On the other seal, a pair of phoenix soar amidst peonies, representing beauty and grace. Both scenes are positioned above the signature "Cangmen" adding an additional touch of authenticity. The dragons' seal bears an incised seven-character stanza followed by a signature dated 1719. Its face is intricately carved with an eight-character inscription that translates to "The Peaceful and Eminent Prince Gong" highlighting its prestigious lineage. Similarly, the phoenix seal boasts a five-character stanza followed by another signature, along with a four-character inscription denoting it as an imperial bestowment. These remarkable seals exhibit deep honey tones suffused with radish veining—a characteristic feature highly sought after by collectors. As captured in this print by FungTsang for Christie's Images (not affiliated with the company), viewers can appreciate both their aesthetic beauty and historical significance within Chinese art history.
