A half-length portrait facing right, wearing clerical bands and a plain black coat. The sitter was Rector of Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, and the father of Admiral Lord Nelson. This portrait was painted at the request of Lady Nelson during the sitter's last visits to her in London. The artist made it a rule that all his sitters except the king and royal family should come to him for their portraits to be painted. He broke the rule on this occasion in honour of Nelson and out of deference to the age of the sitter.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print captures Reverend Edmund Nelson, father of the legendary Admiral Lord Nelson, in all his dignified glory. Painted by Sir William Beechey in 1800, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases the rector of Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, donning clerical bands and a simple black coat.
The sitter's piercing gaze and distinguished demeanor speak volumes about his character and legacy. Reverend Nelson's importance is further emphasized by the fact that Lady Nelson herself requested this portrait during his final visits to London. Despite Beechey's usual rule that sitters must come to him for their portraits to be painted, he made an exception out of respect for both Nelson and his advanced age.
As we admire this artwork today, we are transported back to the early 19th century when men like Reverend Edmund Nelson played crucial roles in shaping history. His connection to one of Britain's greatest naval heroes adds another layer of significance to this painting, making it not just a beautiful depiction but also a window into a fascinating chapter of British maritime history.
