ECUADOREAN COMPETITORS TAKE A WALK AT THE CAYAMBEs VOLCANO SLOPES
Competitors in the Ruta del Hielo (Ice Route) competition, take a walk at
the slopes of the Cayambe Volcano before lugging down the mountain in a race
that ends in the town of Cayambe, 45 kilometers north of Quito, July 27,
2003. Ecuadoreans turned the age-old tradition of ice harvesting to make ice
cream, a practice that died with the advent of electric ice-makers, into an
annual competition just three years ago, as dozens of people climb up the
5, 790 meter-high volcano to race down with part of a glacier on their back.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, Ecuadorean competitors are seen embarking on a remarkable journey at the slopes of the majestic Cayambe Volcano. These brave individuals are participants in the thrilling Ruta del Hielo (Ice Route) competition, where they take a walk to prepare themselves before descending down the mountain in an exhilarating race. The event takes place in the town of Cayambe, located 45 kilometers north of Quito. This age-old tradition turned annual competition was born just three years ago when Ecuadoreans revived the practice of ice harvesting to make ice cream. With electric ice-makers rendering this practice obsolete, locals decided to celebrate their heritage by organizing this unique and challenging race. As depicted in Guillermo Granja's striking photograph from 2003, dozens of people ascend to impressive heights up the 5,790-meter-high volcano with part of a glacier strapped onto their backs. The sheer determination and physical strength required for such an endeavor is awe-inspiring. This image captures not only the breathtaking beauty of Ecuador's natural landscape but also showcases its rich cultural traditions that have stood against time. It serves as a testament to human resilience and our innate desire for adventure and exploration. Guillermo Granja's skillful photography allows us to witness this extraordinary event frozen in time, reminding us that even seemingly forgotten practices can be resurrected into vibrant celebrations cherished by communities around the world.
