EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print takes us back to the enchanting world of pantomime at the London Hippodrome in 1903. The scene is set with Dick Whittington (nov19), the Principal Boy, played by an unidentified actor, sharing a tender moment with his sweetheart, Ruth Lytton, portrayed as Alice Fitzwarren. Top right, Dick is seen with his beloved cat, played by Mr Fred Farren Jnr, a popular child actor of the time. The innkeeper, Mr Seton, played by the distinguished Chattell, is depicted bottom left, while Miss Girdlestone brings the Sultan to life in the bottom left corner. The pantomime would not be complete without the antics of Marceline the Droll, the Hippodrome's beloved clown, who plays the role of Silly Billy in this production. Pantomime, a traditional form of British theatre, was a popular form of entertainment that brought joy and laughter to audiences of all ages. The London Hippodrome, a renowned venue for such productions, was known for its grandeur and spectacle. This photograph offers a glimpse into the magic and wonder of those bygone days, where the art of acting came to life through the passion and dedication of the actors and actresses who graced the stage. Ruth Lytton, Fanny Dango, Chattell, and Mr Fred Farren Jnr, along with the other unnamed performers, brought the characters of Dick Whittington and his companions to life, creating a world of enchantment and delight for the audiences of the London Hippodrome in 1903.
