Wheatfield with Crows, (detail) 1890. Artist: Vincent van Gogh
Wheatfield with Crows, (detail) 1890. In Auvers, Van Gogh painted a large number of landscapes with wheatfields, all on unusual, elongated canvases (50 x 100 cm). He wrote to Theo about two of these works: They depict vast, distended wheatfields under angry skies, and I deliberately tried to express sadness and extreme loneliness in them. But these pictures also had a positive side: I am almost certain that these canvases illustrate what I cannot express in words, that is, how healthy and reassuring I find the countryside. Painted in the last weeks of his life. From the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of Vincent van Gogh's iconic painting, "Wheatfield with Crows" created in 1890 during the artist's final weeks of life. Van Gogh was known for his post-impressionist style and his ability to convey deep emotions through his artwork. In this particular piece, he aimed to express both sadness and extreme loneliness while simultaneously capturing the beauty and solace he found in nature. The image depicts vast wheatfields stretching into the distance under an angry, stormy sky. The dark clouds looming overhead create an atmosphere of foreboding and melancholy. A solitary crow perches on a track or path within the field, adding to the sense of isolation conveyed by this masterpiece. Van Gogh often turned to nature as a source of comfort and inspiration, finding solace in its healing powers. Despite expressing feelings of sadness through his brushstrokes, he also believed that these paintings illustrated what words could not capture – the profound tranquility and reassurance he experienced when surrounded by the countryside. Preserved in Amsterdam's renowned Van Gogh Museum collection, this oil landscape serves as a testament to Van Gogh's artistic genius and emotional depth. Its vibrant colors, atmospheric quality, and intricate details make it an exceptional representation of nineteenth-century impressionism at its finest.
