The Right Hon Lieut-General Viscount Hardinge, GCB, Governor General of India

5920496 The Right Hon Lieut-General Viscount Hardinge, GCB, Governor General of India, 1846 circa (litho) by Ross, William Charles (1794-1860) (after); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The Right Hon Lieutenant-General Viscount Hardinge, GCB, Governor General of India.
Lithograph by E Dalton after Sir William Charles Ross, published by Thomas McLean, London, 1846 circa.
A veteran of the Corunna retreat (1809) and seriously wounded at Ligny (1815) while in attendance on the Prussian General Blucher (Hardinges left hand was amputated - the empty sleeve is clearly visible in this print), Hardinge had a distinguished administrative career in the British Army during the 1820s and 1830s. His term of office as Governor General of India, 1844-1848, was marked by many social and educational reforms, including the establishment of schools and the promotion of railways and irrigation. He magnanimously chose to serve under Lord Gough during the 1st Sikh War (1845-1846) and said that the Indian sepoys reminded him of Portuguese troops he had seen in action in the Peninsular War. He therefore increased their pensions for wounds received in action.); eNational Army Museum; British, out of copyright

The Right Hon Lieut-General Viscount Hardinge, GCB, Governor General of India

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This lithograph captures the dignified presence of Lieutenant-General Viscount Hardinge, a remarkable figure in British military and administrative history. Created by artist William Charles Ross and published by Thomas McLean in London around 1846, this print showcases the distinguished features of Lord Hardinge during his tenure as Governor General of India. Lord Hardinge's illustrious career was marked by both bravery on the battlefield and exceptional leadership skills. Having served in various military campaigns, including the Corunna retreat and being seriously wounded at Ligny while attending to Prussian General Blucher, he displayed unwavering dedication to duty. During his term as Governor General from 1844 to 1848, Lord Hardinge implemented numerous social and educational reforms that left a lasting impact on India. He established schools across the country and actively promoted infrastructure development such as railways and irrigation systems. Notably compassionate towards those who had fought alongside him, Lord Hardinge increased pensions for Indian sepoys injured in action during the First Sikh War (1845-1846). His experiences with Portuguese troops during the Peninsular War drew parallels between their valorous efforts and those of Indian soldiers. This lithograph also highlights an important aspect of Lord Hardinge's life: his left hand amputation due to injuries sustained at Ligny. The empty sleeve visible in this print serves as a poignant reminder of his sacrifice for king and country. Overall, this evocative image pays tribute to one man's extraordinary journey through war zones to governance halls—a testament to courage, compassion, and visionary leadership that shaped British rule in India.
