EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Artillery officer's sword that once belonged to Captain Tyrwhitt Pulman of the Bengal Artillery. Created in 1859 by renowned swordsmith Henry Wilkinson, this unique weapon is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. Captain Pulman joined the Bengal Artillery in 1842 and rose through the ranks to become a captain in 1857. During his furlough from the 2nd Battery, he acquired this extraordinary sword with its distinct characteristics, including an unfullered blade and a non-regulation hilt. It is believed that he purchased it while on leave in Britain. Tragically, Captain Pulman passed away in India three years later, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with this remarkable piece. The blade of this sword bears intricate engravings depicting a winged thunderbolt, a coat of arms, mottos, as well as both the regimental name and Henry Wilkinson's signature. The Wilkinson record describes the blade as having "A Flat solid patent tang" while referring to its hilt as being based on "7th Hussars pattern". With its rich history and stunning craftsmanship, this Artillery officer's sword serves not only as an emblem of Captain Tyrwhitt Pulman's military service but also stands testament to the artistry and skill of Victorian-era weaponry. Its presence within the National Army Museum allows visitors to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic beauty for generations to come.
