EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the first flight of the McDonnell XV-1, military registration number 53-4016, on March 29, 1946. The XV-1, also known as the "Flying Banana," was a revolutionary experimental aircraft designed by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation for the United States Navy. With its unique tailless delta wing design and innovative use of jet propulsion, the XV-1 represented a significant advancement in aviation technology. The XV-1 was the brainchild of James S. McDonnell and his team of engineers, who sought to create an aircraft that could outperform the propeller-driven planes of the time. Powered by a single General Electric J31-GE-3 turbojet engine, the XV-1 was capable of reaching speeds over 600 miles per hour and had a range of over 1,000 miles. The first flight of the XV-1 took place at Mina Field in Mojave, California, with test pilot Bob Stanley at the controls. The aircraft's innovative design and impressive performance captured the attention of the aviation world, paving the way for the development of the McDonnell Douglas FH-1 Phantom and other successful military aircraft. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and vision of the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and the pioneering spirit of aviation in the post-World War II era. The XV-1's groundbreaking design and achievements continue to inspire aerospace engineers and enthusiasts around the world.
