Biplane Biplanes Blackburn Blocks Flown Seat Serial Torpedo Bomber

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment just before the Blackburn Blackburd, serial number N113, takes to the skies for a test flight during the final months of World War I. The Blackburn Blackburd was a single-seat torpedo bomber designed and built by the Blackburn Aeroplane Company towards the end of the war. With its distinctive biplane configuration and large wings, the Blackburd was intended to provide the Royal Naval Air Service with a formidable maritime strike aircraft. The first flight of the Blackburd occurred at the end of May 1918, and three prototypes were built in total during the flight trial phase. However, despite its promising performance, production did not go ahead due to the end of the war. Sadly, the Blackburd's promising career was cut short when the first prototype, N113, crashed during testing at Martlesham Heath at the beginning of July 1918. This photograph, taken around that time, shows the Blackburd standing proudly on the ground, ready for its next sortie. The Blackburn Blackburd represents an intriguing chapter in the history of aviation, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the engineers and pilots who worked to develop advanced aircraft during the First World War.
