EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Roman Emperor Maxentius, also known as Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius Augustus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 276 to 312 AD. Maxentius was the last Roman emperor of the third century and the first of the House of the Severans to be born in Rome. He came to power after the death of Galerius and was recognized as emperor by the Roman Senate. Maxentius is depicted in this portrait wearing the imperial purple robe and toga, adorned with the diadem and a laurel wreath, symbols of his imperial power and authority. The inscription on the bottom right corner of the print identifies him as "IMP. CAES. MAXENTIUS AVG. GERM. MAX. P. M. TR. P. III. P. P.", which translates to "Emperor Caesar Maxentius Augustus, Germanicus Maximus, Pius, Felix, Third Consul, Father of his Country." Maxentius' reign was marked by military campaigns against his rivals, including Constantine I, who would eventually become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Maxentius was eventually defeated and killed in the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312 AD. This portrait is a copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," also known as "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. The 17th-century print offers a glimpse into the classical world and the rich history of the Roman Empire, showcasing the regal and powerful image of Emperor Maxentius.
