EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the regal presence of Roman Emperor Hadrian, also known as Publius Aelius Hadrianus Augustus. Born in Spain in 76 AD, Hadrian rose through the ranks of the Roman military and politics, eventually becoming emperor in 138 AD. This portrait, created as a copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy" published in Utrecht in 1697, showcases Hadrian's distinguished features and the authority of his rule. Hadrian is depicted wearing the traditional Roman imperial attire, including a toga and a laurel wreath, symbols of his power and status. The inscription at the bottom of the portrait identifies him as "IMP. CAES. P. AELIVS HADRIANUS AVG. GERM. D. M. TR. P. X. P. P." which translates to "Publius Aelius Hadrianus, Augustus, Germanicus, Divo Marcio Pius, ten times consul, pater patriae." This means Hadrian was a ten-time consul and the "father of his country." Hadrian is known for his extensive travels throughout the Roman Empire, during which he made significant improvements to infrastructure, including the construction of roads, walls, and public works. He also adopted Lucius Aelius Verus as his co-emperor and heir, ensuring a smooth transition of power. This portrait serves as a powerful reminder of the grandeur and majesty of the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. The intricate details of the copperplate engraving showcase the skill and artistry of the 17th-century engraver, making this a valuable and captivating piece of classical history.
