EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph depicts a group of members from the Galaxy Fraternity, also known as Heiwa (North), of the Zuni Nation, gathered in their sacred chamber, Ki wi sine. The image is based on an illustration by Mary Wright Gill, as featured in John Wesley Powell's 23rd Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, published in Washington, D.C., in 1904. The Zuni people, a Native American tribe residing in the Southwestern United States, are renowned for their rich cultural heritage and complex religious practices. The Galaxy Fraternity is one of several secret societies within Zuni culture, dedicated to anthropic worship, or the belief that humans have a spiritual connection to the universe and the natural world. In this ritual chamber, the members of the fraternity are seen engaged in a ceremony, their faces painted with intricate designs and their bodies adorned with feathers and other decorations. The chamber itself is adorned with symbols and images, reflecting the deep spiritual significance of the space. John Wesley Powell was a pioneering American anthropologist, geologist, and explorer, who made numerous expeditions through the American West and played a key role in the early study of Native American cultures. His Annual Reports of the Bureau of American Ethnology were groundbreaking works, documenting the diverse and complex societies of the indigenous peoples of North America. Mary Wright Gill was a skilled illustrator who worked closely with Powell to bring the details of these cultures to life through her detailed and evocative drawings. This lithograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Zuni people and their spiritual practices, providing a window into a rich and complex cultural tradition that continues to captivate scholars and enthusiasts alike.
