EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning porcelain vase from the 19th century Russian School. Standing at a height of 18.5 cm, this urn-shaped masterpiece depicts a Zaporozhian cossack in all his glory. The reddish-brown body of the vase is adorned with two beautifully painted reserves. The first reserve portrays the cossack resting in a serene green field, accompanied by his trusty rifle and hat. In the background, his noble horse stands tall, while to the left of him, a monument bears an inscription in Ukrainian that reads: "Thank you Zaporozhian Brothers. You served Ukraine and Moscow soil is grateful to you. The glory of your Cossack bravery will never be forgotten". The second reserve presents a picturesque landscape flanked by an elegant tree. A church with a graveyard can be seen alongside a couple strolling along a village road. Both scenes are inscribed in Ukrainian underneath: "Khartitsa - An island in Zaporozhie on the Dniepr" and "From the time of Kii and Oshold to Mazepa, much water from the rich waters of the Dniepr passed". With its circular spreading foot adorned with moulded rocaille handles and elongated neck featuring gilt rimmed opening, this vase exudes elegance and craftsmanship. This remarkable print allows us to appreciate not only the artistic beauty but also captures historical significance through its portrayal of Ukrainian culture and Cossack bravery during that era.
