EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection depicts a scene from the biblical story of Sadrach, Mesach, and Abednego being thrown into the fiery furnace. The title of this history series emphasizes the significance of their courageous act. In this particular image, we see Mesach and Abednego inside the burning oven while one of them is visible through a small window. To our amazement, an angel stands beside him, protecting him from harm as the flames rage around them. Meanwhile, two men are preparing to throw one of the three Hebrews through a hole in the top of the oven. As they carry out this cruel act, three guards stationed on top of the oven can be seen engulfed by flames - divine justice for their wickedness. In another corner of this composition, we witness one Jewish man desperately squeezed before his inevitable fate in that scorching inferno. The print also features an explanatory text written in Latin underneath it. This historical artwork is part of an album created by Philips Galle in 1565 or 1579. It beautifully captures a pivotal moment in religious history when faith triumphed over adversity and divine intervention was witnessed firsthand.
