Severndroog Castle, Shooters Hill, 1807, (1912). Severndroog Castle, Oxleas Wood, Shooters Hill in south-east London, designed by Richard Jupp (1728-1799). It was built to commemorate Commodore William James who, in April 1755, destroyed the island fortress of Suvarnadurg of the Maratha Empire on the western coast of India, between Mumbai and Goa. James died in 1783 and the castle was built as a memorial to him by his widow, Lady James of Eltham. From London - South of the Thames, by Sir Walter Besant. [Adam & Charles Black, London, 1912]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Severndroog Castle, nestled amidst the enchanting Oxleas Wood in Shooters Hill, south-east London. Designed by Richard Jupp in the late 18th century, this architectural gem was erected as a tribute to Commodore William James. The castle stands tall as a memorial to James' heroic act of demolishing Suvarnadurg, an island fortress belonging to the Maratha Empire off India's western coast. The image captures the serene beauty of nature surrounding Severndroog Castle, with towering trees and lush greenery enveloping its grand facade. A couple strolls hand-in-hand along the railings, admiring both the remarkable architecture and picturesque landscape. This evocative scene transports us back to 1807 when Sir William James first laid eyes on his magnificent creation. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this photograph from "London - South of the Thames" by Sir Walter Besant. It serves as a visual portal into 19th-century Britain, where literature and art flourished alongside impressive structures like Severndroog Castle. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded not only of Lady James' devotion but also of how history intertwines with natural beauty and human craftsmanship.
