A Night Class, c. 1881. Creator: Jehan-Georges Vibert (French, 1840-1902)
A Night Class, c. 1881. The artist himself described his painting of a night class: " Under smoldering electric lights, a model in historical costume poses for eager, ambitious art students. A few of them might have real talent, some could become commercial artists, but most, unfortunately, have no future in art at all." Although trained in a conservative academic style, Vibert here pokes fun at his own artistic tradition. Vibert was fond of caricaturing the pretentious elements of 19th-century French society. The work was shown at the 1881 Salon exhibition

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating snapshot of the art world in late 19th-century France. Created by Jehan-Georges Vibert, a masterful French artist known for his satirical depictions of society, this painting offers a humorous critique of the academic tradition he himself was trained in. In this scene, illuminated by flickering electric lights, we witness a group of ambitious art students eagerly observing a model dressed in historical attire. Vibert's description reveals his wry observation that while some may possess genuine talent and others might find success as commercial artists, many will unfortunately have no future in the world of art. Despite being rooted in conservative academic style, Vibert skillfully employs caricature to mock the pretentious elements prevalent within French society during that era. His intention is clear: to shed light on the absurdities and contradictions inherent within his own artistic tradition. Exhibited at the prestigious Salon exhibition in 1881, "A Night Class" showcases Vibert's ability to capture both technical excellence and social commentary through oil on wood panel. This print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate not only Vibert's wit but also his contribution to French heritage and art history as a whole.
