2830757 The Breakfast Room, Pitzhanger Manor, 1802 (pen & ink with w/c on paper) by Gandy, Joseph Michael (1771-1843); Courtesy of the Trustees of Sir John Soanes Museum, London; (add.info.: Pitzhanger Manor House, in Ealing (west London), was owned from 1800 to 1810 by the architect John Soane, who radically rebuilt it. Soane intended it as a country villa for entertaining and eventually for passing to his elder son. He demolished most of the existing building except the two-storey south wing built in 1768 by George Dance, who had been his first employer. In the late twentieth century, an extensive restoration returned much of the building back to Soanes design. It is now a showcase of Soanes design and also hosts exhibitions and events for visitors.); eSir John Soanes Museum; English, out of copyright

The Breakfast Room, Pitzhanger Manor, 1802
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers back to the elegant and refined atmosphere of early 19th-century England. The artist, Joseph Michael Gandy, skillfully captures the essence of this room in pen and ink with watercolor on paper. The image showcases a beautifully designed interior space with an abundance of natural light streaming through the large Georgian windows. A figure can be seen seated near one of these windows, absorbed in reading a book. The theatrical play of light creates a golden glow that adds to the tranquil ambiance of the room. This scene evokes a sense of tranquility and serenity as it depicts the beginning moments of a new day. It is reminiscent of leisurely breakfasts enjoyed in regency times when dining was not just about sustenance but also an opportunity for reflection and relaxation. Pitzhanger Manor House itself holds great historical significance as it was owned by renowned architect John Soane during this period. Soane's vision for this country villa was to create an inviting space for entertaining guests while showcasing his innovative design concepts. Today, Pitzhanger Manor stands as both a testament to Soane's genius and a venue for exhibitions and events that celebrate art and architecture. This print serves as a window into history, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and sophistication that defined life during this era.
