EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a folio from the Khamsa (Quintet) by Nizami, created by the Iranian school in the 16th century. The artwork, measuring 16.9x13.5 cm, is housed at the Freer Gallery of Art in the Smithsonian Institution, USA. The image depicts an exquisite scene from Persian history and literature: Alexander the Great and his army embarking on a thrilling hunt across China's vast plains. In this intricately detailed illustration, we witness huntsmen accompanied by falconers with their majestic birds of prey soaring through the sky. The calligraphy within this folio is attributed to Murshid al-Shirazi and features black nasta liq script written in Persian language. On its verso side, there are four columns of text comprising nineteen lines taken from Nizami's Iskandarnama. Not only does this print capture a momentous historical event but it also offers insight into ancient manuscript binding techniques. The brown leather cover over paper pasteboards with cream-colored doublures adds an element of authenticity to this remarkable piece. Gifted to the Freer Gallery of Art by Charles Lang Freer himself, this Safavid-era masterpiece continues to captivate viewers with its rich cultural significance and artistic brilliance.
