. In this engraving by Thomas Nast, titled "The New York Tammany Frauds" we are transported back to the year 1872, a time when political corruption ran rampant in the United States. The image depicts a scene of satire and social commentary, shedding light on the infamous Democratic Party's fraudulent activities led by Boss Tweed. At the center of attention is Sheriff Brennan, a giant thief casting an ominous shadow over the city. With his long arm outstretched, he reaches into every corner of New York to perpetrate his crimes against justice. Dame Britannia stands beside him, her face contorted with both anger and despair as she witnesses these acts unfold. Meanwhile, Miss Columbia cries out in disbelief at the audacity of it all while pointing towards Boss Tweed himself. This dwarf-like figure symbolizes not only his physical deformity but also represents the moral decay that has infected society under his rule. Nast cleverly incorporates elements of medicine and health into this artwork as well. A depiction of Asklepios (Asclepius), the Greek god associated with healing and medicine, reminds us that just like physical ailments can be cured through medical science and healthcare services; corruption too must be eradicated for our society's overall well-being.
