EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Elizabeth I engraved striking horizontal table clock, dating back to the late 16th century. Crafted from gilt brass by Nicholas Vallin, this remarkable timepiece is a true testament to the craftsmanship of the era. The clock's case features stepped-moulded sides adorned with intricate geometric bands, while arcaded courtyard vistas grace each central arch, offering different views. The latched base panel boasts an engraved border and bears the signature "VALLEN" within a scroll-engraved cartouche. Measuring approximately 8.9x8.9 cm, the dial plate is made of square gilt-brass and exhibits beautifully engraved fan spandrels surrounding a knurled later bezel. A white metal champleve chapter ring once raised on a pierced and engraved domed bell cover adorns the center, marked with flowerhead half hour markers and a 24-hour ring. The movement of this exceptional timepiece consists of square plates supported by four square section baluster pillars. It features a fusee with a later chain for the time train and a fixed steel barrel for the strike train. The back plate includes steel turn catches (one replaced) and houses a calibrated countwheel for striking on bell (although currently lacking). This photograph captures every intricate detail of this historical masterpiece, allowing viewers to appreciate its beauty even centuries after its creation.
