Turkish Christmas Card
Christmas card sent by Ferdinando de Paruta who was the Director of the International Couriers and Guides Office of Pera, Constantinople. Card produced by Sebah and Joaillier in Constantinople. Shows the extent of foreign business and companies established in Constantinople before the First World War when Turkey was on the German side (when most of the overseas companies then quit Turkey). With the declaration of the Republic in the 1920s, the remaining companies then left! It has taken 70 years from this point for the country to really move on from this difficult state

Constantinople Couriers Director Ferdinando Foreign Guides Istanbul Off Ice Pera 1902 Joaillier Sebah
EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Turkish Christmas card, sent from Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1902, bears the signature of Ferdinando de Paruta, the esteemed Director of the International Couriers and Guides Office of Pera. The card was produced by the renowned Sebah and Joaillier, a leading photography studio in the city. The image on the card offers a glimpse into the vibrant international business scene that flourished in Constantinople before the First World War. With Turkey allied to Germany, the city was a bustling hub of foreign companies and investment. The card's intricate design, adorned with gold foil and ornate embellishments, reflects the wealth and sophistication of this era. However, the tranquil scene depicted in this card was short-lived. With the declaration of the Turkish Republic in the 1920s, most foreign companies were forced to leave the country. This card serves as a poignant reminder of a time when Constantinople was a melting pot of diverse cultures and economies, before the tumultuous political changes that followed. The history of this card is as rich as its visual appeal. It offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when the world was more interconnected than ever before, and Constantinople was a vital player in the global economy. Today, Turkey has come a long way from the difficult state that followed the departure of these companies, and this card stands as a testament to the resilience and strength of the Turkish people.
