Liberty, c. 1865-1875. Creator: Gustave Dore (French, 1832-1883)
Liberty, c. 1865-1875. Gustave Dore is best known for his skill as a draftsman (often seen in book illustrations), as well as for his sense of the fantastic and visionary. In the present drawing, his fluid washes and flowing lines of white add to the dramatic scene of a liberating angel breaking chains. The drawing relates to Dores Defense of Paris (Memories of 1870), which treated an event from the recent Franco-Prussian War with a figure representing Liberty. A major difference between the painting and the drawing is that Dore represented soldiers in contemporary uniforms in the painting, but in the drawing of Liberty, he conceived a broader theme in which crowns and medieval costumes evoke an earlier time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Liberty" showcases the extraordinary talent of Gustave Dore, a renowned French artist known for his exceptional draftsmanship and imaginative style. Created between 1865 and 1875, this drawing depicts a powerful scene of an angel breaking chains, symbolizing liberation. Dore's masterful use of fluid washes and flowing lines in white enhances the dramatic impact of the artwork. The drawing is closely related to Dore's Defense of Paris (Memories of 1870), which depicted an event from the Franco-Prussian War. In this particular piece, Liberty takes center stage as a figure representing freedom itself. One notable difference between the painting and this drawing lies in Dore's choice to portray soldiers in contemporary uniforms in the former but opting for crowns and medieval costumes here. This broader theme evokes an earlier era while emphasizing timeless notions of liberty. The brown wash, gray gouache, graphite medium used by Dore adds depth and texture to the composition. This remarkable artwork is housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art where it stands as a testament to Gustave Dore's artistic brilliance. Heritage Art/Heritage Images presents this stunning print that captures every intricate detail with utmost precision. It serves as a visual reminder not only of Dore's immense skill but also as an enduring symbol celebrating freedom throughout history.
