EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Z. Gerbe for Charles d'Orbigny's Universal Dictionary of Natural History published in Paris in 1849, showcases the intricate process of nest building in two different species of sticklebacks: the common or European stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and the ninespine stickleback, Pungitius pungitius. The male and female common sticklebacks are depicted in the foreground, working together to construct their nest. The male, with his vibrant red coloration and distinctive spines, carefully selects pebbles and plants to create a secure and stable structure. The female, with her more subdued coloration, lays and incubates the eggs within the nest. In the background, a ninespine stickleback is shown enlarging the opening of its nest. This species, identified by its distinctive nine spines, also builds its nest in gravelly areas but prefers smaller openings than the common stickleback. The intricate details of the engraving provide a fascinating glimpse into the breeding habits of these small, aquatic fish. Sticklebacks are an important species in the ichthyology world, and this image offers a unique look at their reproductive behaviors, which were being studied and documented during the 19th century. The handcolored engraving adds an artistic touch to the scientific observation, making it a beautiful and educational piece of natural history.
