EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 14th-century altarpiece, titled "Table of the Last Judgement," is a masterpiece of Gothic Art from Spain, specifically from the Convent of the Holy Sepulchre in Zaragoza. Painted by the Catalan artist Jaime Serra between 1358 and 1390, the altarpiece is a tempera painting on wood, measuring approximately 3.7 meters in height. At the center of the composition, Christ is depicted as the Judge of the World, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and various saints. Above Christ, an aureole with a cross and rays emanates, signifying his divine nature. To the left and right of Christ, angels sound trumpets, signaling the end of the world and the beginning of the Last Judgement. The upper register of the painting depicts scenes from the Old Testament, while the lower register shows scenes from the New Testament, including the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The central scene in the lower register is the Last Judgement, where Christ separates the saved from the damned. The saved are depicted entering heaven, while the damned are shown being hurled into hell. The altarpiece is filled with intricate details, such as the halos and auras surrounding the saints and the expressive faces of the angels and demons. The use of color and light adds to the overall effect, creating a sense of otherworldliness and spiritual intensity. This altarpiece is a testament to the rich artistic and religious traditions of medieval Spain and the Middle Ages. It reflects the Catholic and Christian beliefs of the time, emphasizing the importance of prayer, penance, and the fear of divine judgement. Today, it is housed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Zaragoza, Aragon, where it continues to inspire awe and wonder in visitors from around the world.
