Christmas Morning 1919
Impression of Christmas morning 1919 by H. M. Brock, the counterpart of an illustration done by H. M. Brocks brother, C. E. Brock of a Victorian Christmas morning in 1869. The two pictures were commissioned by The Graphic and appeared in its Christmas Number 1919, which celebrated the magazines fiftieth anniversary. Its first issue launched on 4th December 1869. Note the Christmas presents enjoyed by the familys children - a tank, a plane and a teddy dressed in a Royal Navy uniform feature - indicating the period, immediately after the First World War. EDITORS COMMENTS
Christmas Morning 1919: A Post-War Celebration of Family and Joy (Image Number: 11936741) This evocative image, titled "Christmas Morning 1919," is an impressionistic masterpiece by British artist H.M. Brock. Commissioned by The Graphic magazine for its fiftieth anniversary Christmas Number in 1919, this painting serves as a striking counterpart to Brock's brother, C.E. Brock's illustration of a Victorian Christmas morning in 1869 (Image Number: 11936741). The first issue of The Graphic was launched on December 4, 1869, marking the beginning of a rich publishing history. The scene captures the essence of Christmas morning in the aftermath of the First World War. The family's children, bundled up in warm clothing, are filled with excitement as they eagerly unwrap their presents. The gifts, a testament to the time, include a toy tank, a model airplane, and a teddy bear dressed in a Royal Navy uniform. These presents symbolize the period's technological advancements and the enduring spirit of adventure. The warm, inviting glow of the fireplace, the ornate Christmas tree adorned with twinkling lights and ornaments, and the cozy, comfortable setting all contribute to a sense of nostalgia and joy. The children's expressions of pure delight and wonder reflect the magic and enchantment of the holiday season. This painting is a poignant reminder of the enduring power of family, love, and the simple joys of the Christmas season, even in the face of adversity and change. The First World War may have left its mark on the world, but the spirit of Christmas continued to shine bright, filling hearts with hope and happiness.
